The more income you have, the more bills to pay.
When I first got my own salary, from my own sweat, it felt really great. I can finally rent my own place after months of saving it. But then once I moved to my Apartment, I realized that now I have bills to pay. I have to pay the electricity every month so I can keep charging my phone. I have to pay the water bill so I can take a shower as long as I can. I also have to pay the wi-fi, so I can keep streaming Game Of Thrones. And the tax. As a good citizen I have to pay the tax, although tax here is like three times back at home, cutting my salary quite a lot.
And it doesn't stop there.
I have to send money to my mother as well because she already retired, and now it's me and my brother's job to taking care of her. I have to pay my insurance. And I have to start paying the house credit too.
Sometimes calculating on how much I have to pay, it's giving me a headache. Not because I don't have the money, because it's a loooot. Even though I already list everything down, calculated how much I should pay, I always have the feels that there's a bill I haven't write down.
Because of those bills, I am now developing a sense of being economical which basically means being really really careful not to waste money on something that I don't need. All adults eventually must be economical if they want to survive tomorrow in this very harsh world. Unless they are ridiculously rich, like Bill Gates, then they don't have to worry about a thing.
Unfortunately, I ain't Bill Gates. So I must be economical.
This is actually really good, I don't waste my money on stuff I don't even need. For example, I really reallllyyyyyy want that Fjallraven Kanken Backpack since forever because their quality is super nice and I know it will be a long-term invest because they are known to last long but the price is just insane and my bank account will go into a coma if I buy it. And my bills will surely giving me side eyes.
I can't even use it for backpacking with my friends. I need a carrier, like 45L carrier at least for backpacking. Not this Kanken, I can only use it to work, to hangout, but that would be it. And I still have other backpack I haven't use. I was so close on buying it, knowing now I have my own money. But then I kept having this guilty feeling with myself because I will spent that much money just on a backpack. Imagine how many things I can buy with the same amount of money, or I can send the money to my mother instead. So I took a step backwards and said "No, I don't need this.".
Uwaaahhh... I felt like a champion there, being able to say no to something that I really really want. And because of it, I have my mantra now every time I went to the mall or even just do groceries,
"Do I need this?"
At least it can be act as a fence, keeping you from becoming a crazy spender. And keeping a regret that comes after once you see those stuffs you buy aren't exactly the one you really need, away. Yes of course we are just human, we make mistakes. I do sometimes get tempted by those stuffs I ended up buying it anyway although I kept repeating my mantra over and over again. But at least, I don't spend as much as I used to.
Again, being economical.
